The food here is just disgusting and expensive . £20 for a steak and ale pie and veg, the pie I swear to god was a £1 pukka pie, the veg frozen and bland , and the mash was from potato granules and microwaved… avoid like the Black Death from the Victorian era!!!

I've eated here off and on for over 10 years and while it's now a good thing that they are dog friendly, other aspects of the experience need improvement. I've reserved a table to dine with guests at the red lion twice in the past 8 weeks. Both times our reservation was completely ignored. The first time we were squeezed into a draughty corner with a hastily assembled extra table, the second time we were simply handed menus and told to sit where we liked - fortunately there was just one suitable table available. The food is decent enough, but the service right now is poor. The only real ale on tap during my last visit was an awful raspberry milk flavour stout.

We chose this pub as the location was convenient. However the food was disappointing. We felt that it was overpriced. It could be so much better if quality ingredients were used.... Cheap white sliced bread when decent bread would cost very little more.

The Red Lion is a quaint place located near a train station. The building itself is pretty and gives the impression of a rustic coach house. Primarily there are no staff at the red lion, as far as lodgings are concered, and you check in and deal with the reception staff at the holiday inn express across the road, bookings are handled by the holiday inn also. On fist sight the rooms at the red lion appear large spacious and clean, but on closer inspection, such as by say, moving a curtain youll be met with a legion of dead insects dirt and grime, this is off putting to say the least and tlputs you on allert for further filths such as the mold in the bathroom. The bed was comfortable, but there were 2 singles held together by a bed sheet, so it was not ideal. Then there is the matter of the temperature, it was cold out when i stayed and the drafts from the windows added to the sever lack of heating, even including the aditional oil heater and fan combo, meant the room was freezing and you were forced to sit under ckver whilst in the room most of the time. On a plus side, the shower had exceptional pressure and was plenty hot enough. It was just a shame it flooded the tray. The pub situated below serves half decent food and drink, but the prices are extortionate for quality and the service is far from ehat you would expect, at £6.60 for a pint of Guinness I expect it to come in an actual Guinness glass, for example. It's also preferable to have time to finish a starter prior to a main course coming out . One of my larger disappointments was they apply a service charge directly to your bill and do not inform you of this, having had to head to the bar to settle up they simply told me the amount without showing me a copy of the bill or explaining the service charge. Stopped off for lunch on 19th October we had a lovely well cooked lunch and so helpful staff. Very engaging and enjoyable. BUT DO NOT PARK OUTSIDE AS YOU WILL GET A TICKET FROM HOLIDAY INN £100 Ouch Very expensive lunch.

I’ve stayed here many times in the past and enjoyed it. But now the holiday Inn next door have taken control of the pub. Opening hours are now at weekdays only. Standards have dropped and there is definitely no Love in the kitchen anymore, if you can send out a Pie that is described as a crusty pastry in menu but leaves kitchen overcooked and rubbery then you’ve no love. We all know what a pie is like when you over cook it in the microwave. So now you check into holiday inn and wonder back over to the red lion to your room. It’s now all overpriced so if you can then look elsewhere. Note if you do come, breakfast at red lion is not automatically included and car parking charges apply. Food & drinks: Expensive.

We got married at the Red Lion in July 2023 and we cannot fault the staff, food or venue at all. The staff went above and beyond throughout the day to make sure everything went as we had hoped. The only downside is that they have no fruit shoots or sugar free squash for children which meant our nephew with type one diabetes could not drink anything from the Red Lion. Definitely recommend the venue, very reasonably priced. Also a special mention to Alice who was extremely helpful with the planning of the wedding and during the wedding.
